Male-on-Male Romances in the Mainstream
No, you didn’t misread that title. M/M romances by small publishers have made it to the attention of the American Library Association. On December 16, 2010, the article “Bodice Rippers without the Bodice: Ten Male-on-Male Romances for the Core Collection” appeared in LibraryJournal.com (http://www.libraryjournal.com/lj/newslettersnewsletterbucketbooksmack/888366-439/
bodice_rippers_without_the_bodice.html.csp) In that article, the author chronicles the rise of gay characters in other media outlets, citing Brokeback Mountain and Queer as Folk but also slash fanfiction, although she missed the Kirk/Spock fiction of the early 70s. She then went on to list ten titles she considered a good start for building a collection of m/m romances in a library.
I have to admit it. I squealed like a kid at Christmas when I saw the article. Yes, I’m a little biased since one of Dreamspinner’s titles was included on the list, but even if it hadn’t been, I still would have been excited. I remember as an adolescent the thrill of crossing into the “adult” section of the library for the first time and being allowed to check out books labeled “adult.” Now, for the record, adult in my library’s system dealt as much with the reading level of the books as it did with the content. Stephen King’s books were classified as adult right along with the Harlequin romances. My first paid job was working in the library shelving books. So I have a reverence for libraries that makes this article all the more special for me. Those hallowed halls have taken a look at the kind of books I write, the kind of books my employer publishes, and have approved.
I can hear the naysayers now pointing out that having books on a list in an online publication doesn’t change anything. The list is not a mandate; the American Library Association doesn’t work that way. Libraries are independent entities, and each library’s acquisitions director, or whatever title the person bears at each library, will have to decide for himself or herself whether to add any of these books to their collection. Some of them probably already have. Some of them may have even done so before this list came out. Others probably never will. The very fact of the article’s existence is a step in the right direction, though. Unlike a number of recent articles on m/m fiction, this one doesn’t question the
validity of the books because of the gender of their authors, and the list includes books by both men and women. The only caution it gives is the fact that much m/m romance is explicit and so librarians should consider their audience in selecting which books to purchase, but even that is a statement of fact, not a criticism.
Libraries’ collections reflect the directions of interest and acceptance from their patrons. Indeed libraries are often the first places to provide resources for special interest groups within a community because they have a mission to serve all areas of that community, unlike a bookstore which must worry constantly about what will sell. This article is proof that the American Library Association continues to follow the trend that began with such authors as Maupin, Warren, Forster, Renault, and others.
Change is never instantaneous, however much we would like it to be, but for me, and for a good many others, I hope, this article is proof of the changes that have occurred in publishing over the past few years and will continue to occur.

Theme Songs and Heartbreakers
By Meg Benjamin
Each of my Konigsburg books (Book 5, Brand New Me, is now available from Samhain) has a theme song. I didn’t plan it this way, believe me, it just happened. I love Texas music, particularly Americana, and the songs just crept in when I wasn’t looking. Still, I’m glad they did since it gave me a chance to suggest songs people might like to hear and that gave some musical ambience to the books.
For Venus In Blue Jeans the song was “Midnight On the Water,” a lovely old waltz that summed up the essence of Cal Toleffson’s affection for Konigsburg, Texas. Cal was a newly arrived emigrant from Iowa, and Konigsburg taught him to dance and showed him the love of his life. For Wedding Bell Blues, it was James McMurtry’s sultry rocker “Red Dress.” Pete Toleffson got a good look at Janie Dupree’s real, sexy self when she danced to that song, and it was the moment he decided they needed to be more than just friends. For Be My Baby, it was the title song, which can be both love song and lullaby (check out the version by Linda Ronstadt to see how it works) and sums up the love story between two struggling single parents. For Long Time Gone, it was “Jolie Blonde,” that mainstay of Cajun and Tejano musicians that plays at the end when everyone is finally together (just before they have to rush off for the next crisis).
For Brand New Me, the theme song is “Volver, Volver.” Choosing this song for the first dance between the hero and heroine, Tom and Deirdre, wasn’t easy but it was automatic. When I think of a hot slow dance tune, “Volver, Volver” is up there in the top ten. There were some problems, though. First of all, although it’s a very popular song in Mexico and South Texas, it may not be as well known in the rest of the country. More seriously, though, there are two versions of “Volver, Volver,” and I was only interested in one of them. The song was originally written as a fifties-style love song, and that’s the version you get from the song’s composer, the legendary Vicente Fernandez. But it’s also evolved into a fantastically sexy bar song. You can hear that version best in Jon Dee Graham’s growler, and Los Lobos has a live version that’s along the same lines. That’s the one I’m thinking of when the band leader in Brand New Me refers to the song as a “crotch rubber.” Trust me, it is!
Like my other theme songs, this one sums up what’s going on between the heroine and the hero. In this case they’re an unlikely couple, a bar owner and an MBA who’s down on her luck. But music and crotch rubbing tend to minimize differences.
Here’s the blurb:
Brand New Me
by Meg Benjamin
Now available from Samhain. Here’s the blurb:
If any man wants more than a dance with her, they’ll have to get past him…
Deirdre Brandenburg has an MBA and a dream to become the coffee supplier for Konigsburg’s growing restaurant industry. What she doesn’t have is money, courtesy of her billionaire father’s scheme to make her come home. All she needs is three months until her trust fund kicks in. Until then, she needs a job.
Hiring the new girl next door is a no-brainer for ex-gambler Tom Ames. He’s already succeeded in making his bar, The Faro, a growing tourist draw. Deirdre’s beauty will pull in the locals—particularly every red-blooded male in the Hill Country. As he watches her transform from tentative business wonk to confident, sassy barmaid, he realizes he wants first crack at her heart.
When Big John Brandenburg sends Deirdre’s ex-boyfriend to drag her home, the plan backfires, leaving Tom’s bar in shambles and Deirdre kidnapped by a band of loony Texas secessionists.
Things are looking pretty bleak—except the good people of Konigsburg have no intention of giving Deirdre up, either. Even if it takes every Faro employee, every last Toleffson, and one cranky iguana to give the honky-tonk lovebirds a chance at forever.
Warning: Contains dirty dancing, hot summer sex, a honky-tonk makeover, and one nippy iguana.
And here’s a bit of the crotch rubbing:
The singer leaned forward, crooning, “Este amor apasionado…” He sounded a lot more like Jon Dee Graham than Vicente Fernandez, but Deirdre didn’t care. Neither did the crowd. They roared their approval, then began moving to the slow beat. She turned to watch. The dancers moved unhurriedly across the floor, laughing and dipping to the beat. A couple of them were dancing so close Deirdre was half afraid they might set the place on fire. She began to sway along with the music, half-closing her eyes and humming along.
Someone pulled on her tray, and she looked over her shoulder to see Tom, smiling at her. He set her tray on the bar counter, then placed his hand at her waist, nudging her gently out onto the dance floor.
Deirdre’s stomach immediately clenched itself into a knot. Dance? Here? Now? In front of everybody? Tom grasped her other hand in his, the arm around her waist pulling her closer. His thigh brushed against hers and she rested her hand on his arm, feeling the hard muscle of his biceps beneath her fingertips.
“Y volver, volver, volver…” the singer growled.
Tom turned them in a slow curve, his feet moving hers. Deirdre swayed against him as the drumbeat sounded behind them. Suddenly, she was resting her cheek against his, feeling the slight prickle of his beard against her skin. They turned again, and she drew back a little, wishing that her heart weren’t thumping quite so loudly. She only hoped Tom didn’t hear it above the sound of the music.
“Y volver, volver, volver…” The whole band was singing now, along with at least half of the audience.
Tom maneuvered her expertly around a swaying couple, his hand moving down slightly to the side of her hip. She could feel the warmth of his palm against her skin where her T-shirt had pulled up.
Every inch of her body was suddenly sweltering, infected by the heat of his hand. Deirdre felt a clenching deep in her body that had nothing to do with nervousness and everything to do with how close his body was to hers as they made one more turn across the dance floor.
She closed her eyes. Oh god, oh god, oh god. This really wasn’t supposed to happen. At least not like this. Not with him. Not right now.

After a bad divorce, being on her own is exactly the life Carol Bell wants. She is careful to form no permanent relationships as she travels from place to place. She’s a sketch artist for several fashion magazines and cosmetic firms. Her love life is active. She likes sex, content to let that be all that comes from her affairs. Until the day two hunky electricians arrive at her apartment to repair her air conditioner.
Her apartment is warm, but she soon finds herself in a high voltage situation with Baron and Sham, professional bounty hunters posing as handy men. Her life changes instantly from solo to a trio.
Hot Wired by Betty Womack

2/5 Whips in the Backseat
After the really good books I’ve gotten from Siren-Bookstand, I have to say that I was very disappointed in Hot Wired by Betty Womack. The storyline is extremely thin and reminded me of a porn movie—all sex and no plot. The storyline is also very inconsistent, filled with the kind of mistakes I would not have expected from an author with at least seven other books to her name.
For example: Hot Wired starts out with Carol calling electricians because the air-condition is off and the ceiling fans aren’t working. That’s okay, as far as it goes. But it’s only after the first guy shows up, that we find out the power is out. Now come on! This is supposed to be an intelligent, independent woman, and she doesn’t even realize her power’s out until an electrician arrives so they can have hot, fast, down-and-dirty sex—and oh, by the way, have you got any fuses? Then a little later on, she is having sex with both Baron and Sham, the bounty hunters posing as electricians, and they’ve already asked her to move in with them and be a threesome. Yet here she is feeling foolish because she wants to be a threesome with them, and doesn’t know if they want that, too. Jesus, wasn’t she listening when they asked her? I was. So I found her concerns over being foolish, a little…well, foolish. And hard to swallow.
Now by page 53 Carol, a freelance artist, is moving in with her men. Again, nothing wrong with that. I can dig it. But before she leaves her house to go to theirs, she checks her art supplies—which are, in her own words, her most important possessions— HOWEVER, ten pages later, (pay attention now, there may be a quiz) Carol decides to work at the men’s house and discovers she has only two artist pens and nothing else to do her art work with. Excuse me? If this intelligent, independent woman checked her art supplies before she left—these are her most important possessions, don’t forget—then how the hell did the fact that she had only two artist pens to work with come as a complete surprise? Sorry, but I couldn’t buy it. The whole scene felt like just a device to get Carol out of the men’s house and back to her own, where the author needed her to be so she could discover her ex-husband had broken in.
I also can’t buy most of the dialogue in Hot Wired. Some of it was okay, but a lot just didn’t ring true. It felt unnatural and stilted. I mean does a man having sex with a woman really say, “Ride me, Carol, girl.” And if he does, should you repeat it, even in fiction. All right, maybe that’s a little harsh. But to me at least, most of the dialogue didn’t sound like natural conversation.
So is there anything to like about Hot Wired? Yeah, the sex is hot and there is plenty of it. So if you like your sex straight without a lot of plot to muck it up, this may be just the book for you.
Hello Everyone!
A few months ago I had a brain child that I thought would help authors. This was the Birth of the Book Cover Advertising Co-op. Okay so we had a little bit of trouble coming up with a name. Basically we are a group of bloggers working together to help authors get the word out about their work.
There are two plans – one for groups and one for individuals which is more flexible. You can find all of the details on the advertising page, but here is a break down. All ads are in a random rotation that changes when the page is refreshed. Blogs get repeat visitors, but also are always doing things to bring new readers in. Longer and wider exposure is a benefit.
GROUP PACKAGE
Four authors can get together and form a group or an author can have four of their own covers as a group.
Once you have your group you can spend 1 month on 4 blogs, or 4 months on 1 blog. This is mix and match people.
Here are the sites that take erotic material -
- Cheeky Reads – http://cheekyreads.blogspot.com/ (Any genre except Horror) – limited Erotic
- Literary Escapism – http://www.literaryescapism.com/ (Urban Fantasy, Fantasy, Scifi, Horror, Suspense, Thriller, Mystery, Romance with paranormal or fantasy elements) – limited erotic
- Naughty in the Backseat – http://naughtyinthebackseat.com/blog/ (Erotic Romance all genres – Some M/M) – we love erotic
- Naughty Boys in the Backseat – http://naughtyinthebackseat.com/boysblog/ (All genres M/M exclusively) – we love boys
So like I said – Mix and Match
In groups of four the Package costs each author under $15 each. You also have 6 months to book the ads. Any time Jan.-June. If we have increased demand for any genre we will do our best to meet it. At the moment we are, to our knowledge at least, the only people offering this option. Please feel free to contact us with questions or thoughts. Comment here and I will answer them.
If I did not think this would be a great and affordable resource for authors I would not have pursued it like a fiend. The other bloggers foolishly agreeing to jump in with me have gotten a bit swept up. Keep in mind. We are all bloggers not authors so we love! input.
The individual plan is even more mix and match. Allowing you to work with 16 selections. So if your advertising budget is a little bigger or you write in more then one genre, under more then one pen name, or just want to experiment check it out.
We will meet the demand – so even if you are not interested in buying now let us know if the demand for erotic venues is there. We blog to please. Well not really. We have decided – Will work for Books – is more realistic.
Thank you everyone!

Mistress of the Backseat
Hello Naughty Readers and Naughty Authors,
We find ourselves here at Naughty in the Backseat with a bit of a dilemma. How to approach reviews. I am the organizer of the Book Bloggers and Publishers Online Conference, yesterday a group of bloggers got together to discuss reviewing. Believe me, writing a critique of an authors work and making your comments visible to readers is no easy feat. Reviewers agonize over choosing the right words and their desire to help authors get the word out about their books. Here comes the BUT
We do not work for the author, we are not employed by the publisher, so should we feel like we owe them something while we write up a review? Isn’t our obligation to give a fair score and assessment to readers? If a book scores lower then a 3/5 my reviewers do NOT want to hand it over. Our site does not want to hurt an authors sales with a low score. We are readers and we appreciate all of the work that goes into writing and publishing a book. BUT does that mean we should not post reviews on books that were not of a reasonable-acceptable standard or minimum level of quality?
If all reviewers/review sites ignore the titles that receive a low rating and do not post their scores or reviews are we doing readers a service? I was talking with a reader on FaceBook and asked her if she would be interested in reviewing for my sites. Her reply was that she is too honest to be a reviewer. Review sites just give everything a good review because they want free books. I was honestly shocked. Then I went and looked around at the titles that I have read recently. It is not inaccurate. I know it is not out of a greediness for free books in a lot of cases, but we are readers. We love books. We give our time for the author and publisher to help them spread the word about new reads. BUT is this love leaving us with the feeling that we have an obligation to the author? are we biased? By aligning-empathizing- interacting with authors are we doing readers disservice? We could review anonymously at Naughty in the Backseat and Naughty Boys. We could set a policy to only post the reviews above a 2.5/5. We could stop using a rating system.
This is a new problem on the site. Until now we have had very few reviews posting. I as the owner of these sites and others rarely review since I need to interact with the authors and that does put me in an awkward position. BUT now we are faced with the issue, a dilemma with reviewing. So I ask you, what do you think?

There are many different aspects of the Romance genre. Erotic is a branch all its own that over flowing with a whole slew of smaller specialties. Being that each segment of this hot genre falls beneath the colorful Erotic umbrella, one would think that making a jump from writing traditional M/F erotica to write stories with a character dynamic of M/F/M should not be all that difficult. At least that was my initial misconception.
I am currently prepping for the release of my first such jump with my story Claiming Night. When I first decided to make the jump, I followed my usual process. Laying out the basic story and scenes was simple enough and required no real change in what I had been doing all along. Even general conversation fell into place rather easily, well at least up until I started my first sex scene.
At that point, I developed a much better respect for authors who write multiple sexual partner scenes. I cannot even count the number of time in which I looked back at a section of dialog or action and ended up scratching my head while I attempted to make sense of who was doing what to who or who had been talking. At times, it became very disconcerting.
In the end the piece required a bit more editing then previous releases (as the editor will confirm) and gave me a feeling of unexpected accomplishment. I believe the experience helped me grow as an author and look forward to the completion of my second ménage story, which is currently in progress. If you even had the notion to try writing one of these yourself, I highly recommend it.
