Blurb:

Sheriff Scott Dupree’s got more problems than he can handle. He’s alpha of his small werewolf pack and coming up for re-election as sheriff in a year. On top of this, his mother is casting love spells to find Scott a mate. It’s all Scott can do to keep the town and pack under control, let alone his urges to mate.
Ted Canedo is openly gay, a disgraced ex-cop from New Orleans. His patrol partner was killed on duty and Ted took the blame for taking protection money from the store owner to save his partner’s wife and kids grief. No one knew Ted was in love with his partner, not even his partner. Having him die in Ted’s arms killed something inside Ted too.
When the moon is full and Scott’s momma works her magic, Ted’s erotic dreams and his work as a PI bring him to St. Jerome and sexy, straight Scott. Scott’s stunned to learn his wolf is gay and wants to mate with Ted. Ted refuses to become involved with a straight man, much less a werewolf, terrified to risk his heart again.
Especially if it he has to watch Scott fight to the death for his right to claim Ted as his mate.

Message from Lynn Lorenz:

Hello to everyone near and dear to my heart… backseat drivers…. Wait, you’re not driving? What are you doing in the backseat? Oh….uh, that. Okay, but please keep your shoes on and one foot on the floor. Well, I’ll just say a quick hello and Yeehaw! to everyone, I’m just thrilled to be here and have the opportunity to pimp my ride.

Excerpt:  Rougaroux Social Club: Bayou Dreams by Lynn Lorenz

Scott drove faster than usual down the uneven asphalt and gravel road, then came to a car-rocking stop outside the little cottage.

He jumped out, hood-slid across the car, took the steps in one leap, crossed the lit porch, and banged on the screen door.

“Mom! Open up!”

A light came on behind the door, curtains parted, and then his mother opened the door.

“What the hell you makin’ all that racket for, boy? You tryin’ to wake the dead?” She glared at him, but he glared right back.

Scott jerked open the screen door and pushed inside.

“I need to talk to you about that fucking spell you cast.” He headed straight to the kitchen where he knew she’d have a pot of coffee on.

“Watch your language. What spell?” she asked, padding behind him in her pink slippers.

“I want to know what you did. What you said. Just exactly what was in that spell”—she frowned at him—“that prayer you did the other night in the woods.” He grabbed a cup from the cabinet and poured his coffee.

“Oh, that old thing. That was just a prayer to Mary.”

“I know that, Mom, but what did you ask for?” He took a sip of the thick black steaming liquid.

“The usual. A mate for you. Been asking for four months, every full moon. I’m about to give up.” She shrugged and picked up her own cup. A newspaper had been spread out on the kitchen table, telling him that he’d interrupted her reading.

“Tell. Me. Exactly.” He growled. Good Lord, sometimes he wanted to strangle her with his bare hands. Anyone who knew her would understand. If the trial stayed here, the worst he’d get would be justifiable homicide.

“I prayed for the Virgin to bring you a mate. The perfect mate meant only for you.” She reached out and put her hand on his. “That’s all.”

“Any particulars?”

“Particulars?” She stared at him.

“Yeah, you know. Height, weight, hair color.” Gender.

“Non, cher, like I told you, I just want someone who’ll love you for you. Someone who can hold their own with your alpha, who’d stand by you no matter what.”

“Right.” Scott groaned. Like another guy.

“A good woman.” She nodded and took a sip.

“Did you say woman?” He jumped in his seat.

“What kind of question is that?”

“Just asking, that’s all. But did you?”

She cast her gaze heavenward, as if divine inspiration would come to her, then shrugged. “Nope. Don’t think I said woman at all. As well as I can remember, I just asked for a mate.”

“Just a mate?” Scott exhaled and fell back into the chair. He was screwed. Somehow, for once, his mother’s voodoo-hoodoo actually worked, only with a backfire of cosmic proportions.

There was only one answer. He’d been sent a mate. Only it was the wrong fucking sex.

Scott groaned and cupped his head in his hands.

“Oh, Mom. Oh shit.”

“Scott, stop. You’re scaring me.” His mom tried to pull his hands down. “What’s going on, son? Tell me.”

“I can’t. I just can’t. Promise me, you’ll never, ever do that again. No more spells, no more prayers.” He dropped his hands and stared into her face. “Please, for my sake.”

“Well, you can’t ask me to just stop praying. I’m a Catholic; it’s what we do best. That and guilt.” She reached into her apron and pulled out her rosary. “See? I pray all the time.”

“The kind of praying I’m talking about is the one with dead cats and candles and is done at midnight.” He growled again.

“Oh.” She cleared her throat. “I’ll stop.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.” She looked at him as if he’d lost him mind.

“Thank you.” Well, that was great for the future, but what was he going to do about now?

She’d called on whatever godforsaken powers of heaven or hell and brought him a mate, only it was a man, not a woman.

A fucking man.

A fucking gay man.

Scott had no idea how to make this go away.

“Mom, if I reject my mate, what happens?”

“What? No one does that, cher.” She chided him as if he were a child.

“But what if? As alpha, I can deny a mating, and I know that the male can fight me, leave the pack, or find another mate.”

“That don’t happen very often. Usually a wolf finds another mate if his own mate dies, or the one he would be mated to dies.” She picked up her pack of smokes and tapped one out.

“What if he doesn’t like his mate?”

“That’s impossible. Your mate is your mate. You two are bound to each other, destined to be together.”

“But what if someone doesn’t want their mate?”

“They don’t. No one gets a divorce.” She shook her head, flicked her lighter, and lit a cigarette.

“Then why the prenup?”

“It’s really just to show the woman how serious this whole werewolf thing is.” She sat back and tapped her ashes on the edge of the ashtray. “Scott. Think about it. Who do you know in this pack who’s ever been divorced?”

Scott thought. Not a single name came to him.

Oh he was so screwed.

“But for argument’s sake, say I don’t want my mate. What would happen?”

She closed her eyes. “I’m not sure, cher. I know a wolf without a mate can wither and die, that’s for sure. Turning away your mate would be like committing suicide, child. It’s crazy, and no one I know of, or ever heard of, has done that.”

Suicide.

God, it just might come to that.

How could he…what could he…what would everyone think? They lived in conservative, Catholic bayou country. There were no gay marriages in Louisiana. As far as he knew, there were no gays anywhere around here.

A sheriff with a gay partner? He’d never get reelected, no fucking way.

Oh hell. An alpha with a gay mate? What would Bobby Cotteau say about that? At fifty, he’d stepped down, trusting Scott to lead the pack in his stead. How could he face Bobby?

Wyatt. Wyatt would jump all over this. Push for a pack decision against his mating.

The bastard would pounce on the opportunity to knock Scott out of the alpha spot. Scott’s only choices would be to leave the pack, give up his mate and take a chance on not finding another and dying, or stand up to the pack and fight for his mate.

Right. Fight Wyatt to the death for a man Scott barely knew. He could hope Wyatt won, or maybe he’d just let Wyatt kill him.

There had to be a way out of this, but his options looked slim.

Leave his home and career behind.

Be mated to a man.

Or suicide.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.

Right now, Scott didn’t know which one he’d chose.

* * *

Ted pulled into the parking lot of the B and B and turned off the lights as he rolled to a stop. Still shaken from what had happened at the restaurant, he needed some time to think. He rested his forehead on the steering wheel.

“Hey, you don’t look okay.” Darcy rubbed Ted’s back, his hand gliding gently over his muscles.

Darcy had been so quiet, Ted had forgotten about him.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” He straightened, making Darcy move his hand.

Really it had been comforting. Not for the first time Ted thought about hooking up with Darcy.

He turned to look at the man next to him.

Darcy gazed into his eyes, then let his gaze drop to his mouth, and leaned forward.

What the hell.

Ted caught Darcy’s mouth with his, taking control and pushing the man back against the seat.

Darcy gave in, opening his mouth, letting Ted take what he wanted.

Usually, this surrendering would turn Ted on, but tonight, nothing.

His cock didn’t even twitch.

Shit, what was going on? He must be more out of it than he thought, so he tried harder. He’d force himself, if he had to.

Ted deepened the kiss, grabbing the back of Darcy’s head, clutching a handful of hair, stroking the artist’s mouth with his tongue.

Still nothing.

He broke the kiss, leaving Darcy panting and gasping for breath.

“Goddamn, man.” Darcy put his hand on his chest. “That was intense.”

“Sorry.” Ted shrugged. “Guess I’m not really in the mood.”

“If that’s not in the mood, I’d be terrified to see what was. Although, it might be a wild ride.” Darcy chuckled.

“Yeah. Wild.” Ted snorted.

“Are you sure that guy wasn’t the one you knew? It seems like that encounter has upset you.”

“Yeah. It has. I can’t explain it right now.” Nor did he want to tell Darcy about the overpowering lust that hit him at meeting the sheriff’s blue eyes.

Ted opened the door and got out. Darcy followed him up the walk and through the front door.

“I’ll see you in the morning.” Darcy gave him a wave and went up the stairs. Ted was thankful the man didn’t push for more, because right now, he just couldn’t deal with it.

Marie stood behind the counter and smiled at Ted. He remembered a little unfinished business.

“Oh, by the way, did that other fellow ever show up?” Ted asked.

“As a matter of fact, he did. About an hour after y’all left. I told him where everyone had gone to dinner, but he said he was tired and went straight up to bed.” She nodded to a few of the other guests as they came through the door.

“Guess I’ll meet him in the morning.” Ted turned and climbed the stairs. He waited until he was in his room before peeling off his jacket, so no one caught a glimpse of his gun.

Once he’d grabbed his kit, he took off his shoes, and stowed his holster and gun in his luggage, then headed to the bathroom. The door stood open, and he went inside. Either Darcy had gotten there first, or Ted had beaten him to it.

Ted brushed his teeth, washed his face, and decided to shower in the morning. He trod barefooted back to the room. As Ted closed the door, Darcy slipped across the hall to the bath, wearing only his jeans. Ted watched through the crack in the door.

No denying it, the man was fine. Why didn’t Ted’s body think the same thing?

After replacing his kit on the bedside table, Ted undressed down to his briefs and climbed in bed. He sank into the feather bed, groaning with relief.

With everything he’d been through tonight, he doubted he’d have a hard time sleeping.

But an hour later, Ted still lay in bed, thinking about the sheriff.

Blue eyes. A killer body. And Ted couldn’t be certain, but he thought just for a moment, he’d seen light reflect off golden hairs on the man’s hands. Across his knuckles to be exact.

Tanned hands.

Ted closed his eyes as if he could shut out the truth. No fucking way. It couldn’t be the guy from his dream.

That would just be too fucking unreal. Too much of a cosmic joke.

Well, the universe could try to screw Ted Canedo, but Ted wasn’t going to bend over for it. The universe could take a flying fuck, for all he cared.

There was no way he’d get involved with another straight man.

He might as well just pull out his gun and shoot himself right now.

with C. Zampa

Join us in meeting some of the new authors on the scene every Friday.  Hear what the newbies have to say and discover your new favorite author.

1) How does it feel to be an Author Virgin?

CZ- What a good word for it, because it feels just like that…a virgin’s first time. All the excitement leading up to it, then THE event. And that wonderful high when the book goes live.

2) How well do you really know your characters?  Underwear preference?  Favorite flavor of ice cream?  Coffee or Tea?

CZ- Oh, I LOVE this question! Underwear? Oh, Candelario would wear NO underwear. If he did, he’d wear those nice white, tight briefs. Ice cream? Hmmm. He’s not really an ice cream fellow at all. And coffee. Definitely coffee. In fact, there’s a coffee scene in the book.

3) What music are you listening to lately?

CZ- Would you believe it? Hispanic music! Traditional, club techno. It started as inspiration for my novella, which is primarily Hispanic, but I grew to love the spicy, sexy music.

Eduardo Yanez4) If you were going to cast the hero of your book, what actor would get the part?

CZ- Wow. These are fantastic questions! I would pick, without hesitation, the Hispanic actor, Eduardo Yanez.

5) How likely are people you meet to end up in your next book?

CZ- Giggling at this one. My entire office is practically in my book! They’ve even allowed me to use some of their names. But it is VERY likely.

About the Author:

C. Zampa’s earliest stories were not written words, but drawings. Adventures, romances–all drawn in comic book style, complete with dialogue bubbles. Countless hours were spent in her room with her Mead Academie sketch pad and pencils. While the stereo headphones piped the classics into her ears, she feverishly sketched the wonderful characters who lived in her head, creating little vignettes for them.
Even her early drawings reflected romance as she felt it–erotic, sensual, natural, uninhibited.
In her pseudo-hippie days of high school, she began to write. Her teachers encouraged her to take her writing seriously, but to her it was strictly for pleasure. Once entering the working world, she left writing behind; but, a few years ago, overwhelmed by a need to create, she opened a blank document and began to write again and has not stopped since.

Can Brad let go of Jeff and the guilt he feels about beginning to care for another man? And can Mac deal with his fears of being gay and accept the fact that he is in love with Brad? It will be a struggle for both men to keep their heads and hearts intact while exploring what life has to offer.

EXCERPT:

Renowned oncologist Dr. Bradford Mitchell sat hopelessly in the cold, sterile Seattle hospital room, clinging to the hand of the man he loved more than anything in this world, more than life itself. The man he couldn’t save—no matter how hard he tried—from the terrible cancer eating away at his body. As Jeffery Owen, his partner and lover of fifteen years, lay unconscious and seemingly peaceful, Brad watched him draw in and exhale short, steady breaths and listened to the constant blip-beep blip-beep blip-beep of the heart monitor, the only sign that Jeff was still alive.

He tried to remember happier times when their lives didn’t involve daily doctor’s appointments, harsh rounds of chemotherapy, and the many other experimental treatments he’d selfishly forced Jeff to endure. He tried to remember back to when Jeff was a healthy and strikingly handsome young architect with a client list envied by every other architect in his firm. A time when his own thriving practice, now sold, his research, and Jeff were all he needed in this world. They were happy and had the rest of their lives to look forward to.

Then that dreadful day came, with the news of stage four colon cancer. Their entire world was turned upside down in one day. After two years of fighting and enduring one experimental treatment after another, Jeff made the decision to stop everything. Brad had tried unsuccessfully to convince Jeff to keep fighting, but Jeff had had enough. Brad knew that the side effects of the treatments were probably worse than the effects of the cancer, at least early on, but he just thought that if they kept trying, something was bound to work. In the end, however, it was Jeff’s life and his decision, and like it or not, Brad had to accept it.

Everyone at the hospital knew Dr. Mitch and gave them as much privacy as Jeff’s medical needs would allow, which had been a blessing over the last couple of months. Before Jeff slipped into the coma, they’d had long hours just to be together and enjoy the time Jeff had left. Although Brad did his best to hide his breaking heart and grief, he knew Jeff was brutally aware of what he was going through. Jeff had once told him that if their positions were reversed, he couldn’t imagine how he would cope. Jeff had done the best he could to prepare and calm Brad, and to assure him that he was at peace with his decision. Jeff had also made him promise to go on with his life, to eventually accept the love and happiness that would surely come his way if he was open to it. He reluctantly promised, as he could never deny Jeff any request no matter how big or small, but he knew the promise was as empty as his heart. He couldn’t go on; he couldn’t imagine a life without Jeff, nor could he fathom falling in love again.

As Brad sat in the same uncomfortable hospital chair in which he’d sat for the last two and a half months, he didn’t feel anything but the empty world around him. Hand in hand and with his head on Jeff’s lap and his ear listening to as much as feeling his breaths, he noticed that Jeff’s breathing was becoming more and more unsteady and knew that his time on this earth was running out.

Suddenly, as if Jeff were forcing memories of happier times into Brad’s defeated body, events of their fifteen years together started to flash before his eyes. The smile on Jeff’s face when they moved into their first home together, that he had designed. How every Christmas morning Jeff made them wear goofy flannel pajamas and sit cross-legged around their Christmas tree, opening gifts. How funny Jeff looked at their Halloween party two years ago when he was in a wheelchair and insisted they dress up as Blanche and Baby Jane Hudson from What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? How hot he looked in his scuba gear on their last diving trip to Bermuda. How happy and relaxed he was when they were on their yearly trip to Alaska. They’d had such a full, wonderful life, until …. They both thought they had a lifetime together, but fate had other plans. So here they were, Jeff unconsciously fighting for every breath and Brad not knowing which breath would be the last. God, how did it all come down to this and how will I ever survive?

Sensing that the end was near, Brad removed his shoes, climbed into the bed, slid his arm under Jeff’s neck, and held him close. For the first time since the diagnosis, his tears fell freely. Then the rise and fall of Jeff’s chest stopped, and the heart machine indicated a long, flat beep. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and calmly reached over and turned off the heart machine. Stone-cold silence.

With Jeff still in his arms, he gently kissed him on the lips and whispered, “So long, my love, rest well.” He got out of the bed, picked up his shoes, and backed away from Jeff’s bed, never taking his eyes off his lover. When he reached the door, he stood there for what felt like hours; finally he turned and opened the door to what was left of his life.

The next few days were a blur. Friends consoled him, surrounded him, and tried to feed him, but he was just going through the motions. The memorial service and burial were exactly as Jeff wanted, simple and sweet; their friends saw to that. But as he thought back, he couldn’t remember a single detail or anything he’d said or anything that had been said to him. All he remembered was seeing a coffin holding the other half of his empty existence.

When the services were over and he’d forced his friends to go home, he was finally alone in the house he and Jeff had lived and loved in. He looked around and immediately knew he couldn’t stay in this house any longer, at least not right now. Everywhere he turned, something reminded him of his love and his loss.

He spent the next three hours packing his clothes, and he placed four suitcases at the front door. He wanted to take something to remember Jeff, but what? He took one last look around and decided to take the picture of him and Jeff on one of their many vacations to Hiline Lake in the Alaskan mountains. They both loved the wilderness and especially this spot; they often referred to Hiline Lake as their spot. They looked so happy then, and that’s all he wanted to remember. He put his suitcases on the front porch, called a cab, and closed and locked the front door. He didn’t know if he would ever be back, but he knew where he was going.

Laminated Five Heroes

by Tara Lain

I’m delighted to have been asked to blog here today because I do love Naughty Boys. In fact, I tell people that when they read my books they get to meet “The Beautiful Boys of Romance”, and that’s what I’d like to talk about today.

Johnny DeppDo you remember in the old Friends TV series, they had the “laminated five”? These were the five men (or woman) that you could have sex with and your significant other could not object. It’s kind of a popular expression with some of my friends. “Who’s on your laminated list?” Year after year, Johnny Depp makes it to one of my top spots. Adam Lambert is on there too, (not that he’d be interested).

But what about book characters? We don’t usually think of them for the top five list since, after all, they aren’t “real”. But then again nether are Johnny or Adam in my world, so why not book characters? In fact, that’s what I try to do when I’m writing. Create at least one hero in every book that is worthy of your laminated five list. A guy so dreamy, so drool-producing, that he surpasses all the rules. These are my “beautiful boys of romance”. I write them, first, because I love them , and I hope you will too.

In my novel, Genetic Attraction, you only have to read a few chapters to know the special relationship I have with Roan Black. He’s not the central character of the book. Em is the main POV character, and Jake is the principal man. But Roan? He’s just special; gentle, charming, sexy, wise and thoroughly yummy. You can tell he captured my heart and a top place on my list. In my recently drafted sequel to Genetic Attraction called Androgynous Dreams, I’m crazy for the complex, reclusive, and very androgynous Elijah who has Shirley Temple curls. I hope you’ll meet him this year.

But I can’t hog all the top spots with my own characters. I haven’t written enough books yet. So I will share a few of my other favorite heroes (five plus a bonus!)

Shasertai in Jet Mykles steampunk story, Sursein Judgment, is one of my all-time favorites. Complex, beautiful, flawed, he’s definitely on my list.

Edward in Lynn Lorenz’ marvelous Edward Unconditionally is clearly someone on her top list (and mine) because he’s written with such love. Funny, sensitive, bright and, we have to say it, flaming gay, he captures all hearts.

Jean Claude from Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series is my vote for top sexiest vamp of all time. Of course, I love pretty men, and he’s the prettiest. He’s a marvelous combination of ruthless and loyal, cool and loving.

Matthew from Sloan Parker’s More is the heart of the novel , and becomes the reader’s emotional anchor in the story. You have to love him.

A new love of mine is Boone in Ethan Day’s Sno Ho, and its sequel Life in Fusion. He’s funny and captivating.

I can’t forget Adin in Z.A.Maxfield’s Notturno and Vigil. Few humans can out-do a vamp for fascination, but this one does.

Now it’s your turn. Who are your “laminated five” heroes? They don’t just have to be from romance novels. Movies? General interest books? Do you have a secret crush on Mr. Darcy or Hawkeye? Share.

The supermodel’s fame makes secrecy impossible. Their ménage threatens to crumble all she’s worked for. What will give way to make room for genetic attraction?

Hola, I’m James Buchanan and I’m here playing today. If you read my official bio I’ve apparently written over a dozen novels and single author anthologies (I had to stop and count them on the shelf above my desk). I have a guy, we have kids and we often pick them up from school on the Harleys. My evil day job is as an attorney – I’ve been known to wear leather
frock coats and boots to court.

A lot of what I write are Mystery/Thriller type Romances and often they feature BDSM. Recently, I gave a writing BDSM workshop with Joey Hill for Romance Divas and I’ve participated on panels for the Popular Culture Association on both gay romance and BDSM power dynamics in gay romance. My novel, Hard Fall, took the honorable mention in the National Leather Association – International’s novel category this year.

I base my BDSM/Kink books on the theory that this is not just something the characters DO it is who they ARE. Submission, in my view, is about being comforted, swaddled up in this big warm blanket of safety – except the blanket is made of leather or rope or expectation. It is a secure place to be. It is a loving place to be. The submissive is unconditionally accepted for who they are. They are safe, loved and adored in that condition of submission. Submissives need it, they crave it. Domination, on the other hand, is not about getting your way or pushing people around. While they may get off on inflicting pain, discipline or punishment, Dominants are not abusive jerks. It is the thrill of making “it” happen: the turn on, the moment of connection, the second absolute trust is given over, that drives their Dominant leanings.

Because I write the characters that way, I think people connect with my BDSM books – I humanize it, not fetishize it.

As an author at MLR Press, love, romance, and passion between men are the themes I work in. In the past few months, my muse has kept me writing mainly contemporary erotic romance with my Conquest series, which follow a rock band and those who are connected to them. The first book in the series, Conquest, was what pushed me toward wanting to have my work published. Even though I’d written for years, when the main character of the first two books, Jesse Alexander, came to me, I knew I wanted to share his story with readers.
-
Jesse wasn’t the first gay character I’d written, but his story was the first romance, and when I wrote it, I felt as though I was truly writing something I believed in, how love is the inherent right of all individuals. It’s a sad truth in the world today not all people share this belief, so for me, to write a story portraying a relationship between two men as loving, strong, and positive was very important. And it set the tone for how all my works to date have been.
-
Now with having three books in the Conquest series published, for my next work I thought I’d try something different; vampires. It’s also m/m erotic romance in a contemporary setting, and while it’s still in the works, I can honestly say I’ve had a blast writing it. Though, how I jumped from writing about rocks stars to vampires, I’m not sure. I just go where my muse leads me, and I do enjoy trying my hand at new genres. Back in the day, I used to write sword and sorcery fantasy (unpublished) and even now, I have an m/m samurai historical on the back burner.
-
Yet no matter the genre, there are consistencies with my stories in that threads of love and passion between the characters run throughout. I’m a hopeless romantic at heart, and to be able to bring two characters together, from the first kiss, through struggles and trials as they work to have a happy ending together, is like a dream come true. And what makes it the ultimate dream come true is how my work has found the perfect home at MLR Press.

But now, I’ll share my last things, a little bit about each of my current releases at MLR Press and a huge thank you to Terry and everyone who has taken the time to read about me and my work!

Conquest: Book 1 in the Conquest series

As the vocally gifted lead singer of his band, Conquest, Jesse Alexander refuses to
let anything hold him back from achieving his dream of becoming one of the greatest
performers to ever hit a stage. Evan Arden was thought of as a musical genius when at
the height of his career, he vanished from the spotlight. Together, their relationship is
just as intense as their music careers, but with the pressures of success and fame pushing
down on them, Jesse must decide what’s more important to him, his life of music, or his
life with Evan.

No Fear: Book 2 in the Conquest series

After touring for more than a year with his band, Conquest, singer Jesse Alexander is
ready to head home for a long rest with his partner, superstar vocalist, Evan Arden.
When it’s time to hit the studio again, there’s competition from two new bands and
tensions reach a breaking point that threaten not only Conquest’s future, but Jesse’s
relationship with Evan. As he faces challenges unlike any he’s ever known, Jesse must
somehow keep it together to duplicate Conquest’s success and reach his ultimate goal:
showing NO FEAR and announcing his love of Evan publicly.

Keys to Love: Book 3 in the Conquest series

For two years, Julian Forrester’s been playing keyboards and piano for Conquest.
Having left behind a classical career, he’s reached a level of fame like he’s never
dreamed. But fame and fortune can’t bring him the one thing he wants most; love.
Morgan Chandler spent years teaching students to love music until budget cuts
forced him out of a job. With family debts rising, Morgan accepts a job as a roadie
for Conquest. He thinks he’ll hate it with one exception – he’ll be close to Julian.
Can the two find the right music together that will lead them to the Keys to Love?

4/5 Story 5/5 Whips in the Backseat for Writing

-

Spoils of War is an excellent erotic romp.  A worthy Naughty read and the writing duo Aleksandr Voinov & Raev Gray are undeniably talented writers!  I love their style, the precision and execution of Achilleus’ tale speaks of their talent with words and the amount of care they put into the mythology and research.  Part of the mythology is what stood in my way as a reader.

-

The opening lines of the book:

When Achilleus, the greatest warrior who ever lived, falls before Troy (or Ilion, as it was known), Ares, God of War, stands ready to take his spirit with him to his palace. There, Ares demands that Achilleus yield to him. But can the embrace of a god and the offer of immortality make Achilleus forget his one true love, Patroklos?

-

Thank you for your research and accuracy to the time and history, but if I had not seen the movie Troy I think I would have been very lost.  It is from that film that I recall that Achilles as I am more familiar with the name being spelled, is the son of a water goddess and makes a prophecy about the two paths in life that he can choose from, a long life, or glory.  Maybe calling Illion – Troy and Achilleus – Achilles the story would have played down the style that those added touches using more accurate names lends the story.

-

The story is a fulfilling read and has a clear style that if you enjoy take the time to go out and look for more titles by these authors.  Spoils of War stands out from the pack.  It is a read that you will not forget.

Writing about Achilleus and Ares was a thing waiting to happen for a long time. When I approached my brilliant co-writer Raev Gray with the idea, the Iliad and Troy had been sitting in my brain for something like 25 years. I grew up on the stuff – a collection of the mythology was one of the best gifts I ever got as a kid. Sex, passions, violence. I inhaled it all.
-
Achilleus was one of my favourites – the greatest warrior who ever lived. His rage at the death of his ‘friend’ Patroklos, his bottomless, sacrilegious revenge had to have roots in love, I never doubted that. When I studied Ancient History (yup, got a degree in that), I learnt about the various interpretations of that relationship. “Did they or didn’t they” wasn’t a question that would have interested the Ancient Greeks.
-
I have to admit I was pretty excited when they put “Troy” onto the big screen in 2004.   I’ve seen the – admittedly pretty trashy – film a dozen times. I even own it. But it never satisfied me. A million versions of the Iliad, and a million versions that never got the whole point – the point I saw in it.
-
The big question that Achilleus faces is this: live long and raise a family, become a well-respected elder and king, or live short and win lots and lots of glory. As we all know from Homer’s story, he chooses the short life, and glory. Then his friend/lover/comrade Patroklos dies.
-
And the question is – have you made the right decision, Achilleus? I never doubted that he’d sacrifice his own life for greatness – but would he sacrifice Patroklos? If he could give it all back in return for Patroklos’ life, would he?
-
And that’s the core of all romance fiction, isn’t it? How much are we willing to sacrifice? What are we really made of?

Skywalker

by Kiernan Kelly

Publisher: Torquere Press

Robert Prescott Reyes-Waterson is a man with four names, an office-with-a-view, and a superior attitude, particularly when it comes to blue collar workers. That changes when he meets Joseph Brant, a full-blooded Mohawk ironworker who isn’t what he seems, and won’t take “no” for an answer. – Synopsis from TorquerePress.com

Skywalker by Kiernan Kelly

4.95/5 Whips in the Backseat

Skywalker by Kiernan Kelly is a great short read.  And by short I mean a compact 28 pages.  What amazes me is when authors, and I include Kiernan Kelly among them, are able to give you a complete story in so few words.  It is skill that is missing in a number of the short Romances I have read that I walked away wanting more.  With this story I was quickly drawn into the Romance and the characters.

Joseph and Robert work the “Opposites Attract” angle, facing a white collar, blue collar misconceptions after meeting in a bar.  Sometimes you wonder as a reader what made these two characters approach each other almost at first site across a room.  In this case there was no doubt, it just worked and their interaction was engagingly believable.

It is a great short read and one I will definitely be revisiting it in the future.  I am a notorious re-reader.  So if you read M/M this is a great one to add to your TBR List.  It was one of those reads where I was looking at the page count cause I just did not want the book to end.

False Colors
Review by Jasmine
5/5 Whips in the Backseat
We love a man in uniform.  Two men in uniform is well a double treat, as is Alex Beecroft’s writing.  Truthfully I thought my eyes would glaze over when I saw the number of pages and that it was Navy intensive.  Lines, and knots, and sails, not usually my cup of tea.  It never happened.  I loved the tension, and the action.  The time spent at sea was enjoyable to read about even for a land lover like me.
My limited experience with the idea of the historical Navy life – multiple viewings of Pirates of the Caribbean – did not detract from my enjoyment of the story.  The tension of a complex man like John Cavendish who is facing a time period less accepting of homosexuality and a career that makes being discovered a death warrant, drew in my heart into the tale.   Alex Beecroft grabbed me with her characters and the struggle to have their love and hide it.
Love between male characters in historicals is a concern.  I enjoy the romance.  I enjoy the love story but the HEA never sits well.  I worry about the boys.  What if they get caught?  What if another Navy man suspects?  I would definitely read more of Alex Beecroft’s work and actually looking forward to visiting the high seas again.
