First Timer Friday

with Miranda Baker

Join us in meeting some of the new authors on the scene every Friday.  Hear what the newbies have to say and discover your new favorite author.

1) Who did you dedicate your book to and why?

MB-You know, I agonized over that one. There are so many people who support a writer – editors, friends, family. I finally decided that my husband deserved sole credit for Bottoms Up because without him, it truly wouldn’t have been written. He sends me upstairs to write while he entertains all our small children. He delivers meals to me at the computer. And whenever I get blocked he gives me excellent advice: add more sex.

2) What music are you listening to lately?

MB- Music inspires a state of mind for me, and each story has a soundtrack that I listen to obsessively while writing it. The songs that inspired this story were “Come On Get Higher” by Matt Nathanson, “Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence and “Sorry” by Buckcherry. At the moment I can’t get Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie” out of my head. So passionate. So painful.

David Beckham3) If you were going to cast the hero of your book, what actor would get the part?

MB- David Beckham. Totally. He’s not an actor, but he embodies the absolute physical confidence of Johnny – the proud shoulders, the challenging glint in his eyes, the tattoos. *moan* Johnny was always Beckham for me.

4) Favorite Superhero?

MB- Ha! I was just discussing this with my editor. Wolverine. Raw. Dangerous. Powerful. When I was in college I used to hang out in bed on lazy Saturdays and watch the X-men cartoons with my boyfriend. Good memories! ;-)

5) What makes your first book Naughty?

MB- Oh, dear. *clears throat* I would have to say it’s all the graphic, kinky sex. It’s a BDSM love story, so the emotion is there too, but when Johnny and Destiny throw down, they really go for it. Their desires are extreme and they take it to the limit. I suppose a simpler answer is nipple clamps, caning and anal sex…. followed by chocolate cheesecake. A man who understands women that well must be naughty!

About the Author: It makes Miranda chuckle to think about all the romantic short stories she wrote in her rather too literary creative writing classes in college. If only one of her professors had steered her toward popular fiction! On the other hand, if she had discovered her calling back then, she wouldn’t have gone to culinary school, she wouldn’t have met her husband, she wouldn’t have had three children and she wouldn’t have turned to erotic romance to get her mojo back during all the hair-raising kid raising.

Samhain Publishing

Synopsis:

Destiny Blake senses that her boredom with blond pretty boys is about to come to a flesh-tingling end. Since her first love left her for a more experienced Domme, she’s honed her topping skills to a fine edge. Yet the idea of bottoming for the hard-bodied owner of her favorite BDSM club is an erotic challenge she can’t resist.

Destiny isn’t Johnny Delcorral’s type. Tangling with her, even for one night, is a dangerous proposition for a man with good reason for needing his women submissive. But he suspects she’s hiding a submissive streak under her dreadlocks and leather, and he hungers to make her obey—and curb her reckless spirit.

The battle is on, both in the bedroom and out. Under Johnny’s knowing hands, she is dismayed to discover she’s enjoying submission more than she cares to admit. And Johnny finds himself relishing her defiance instead of curbing it—and fighting a growing unease with his inability to find her boundaries.

Until one night he pushes one step too far—and comes hard up against the one boundary he never expected to find.

Terry Kate :   I am welcoming the Mistress of origami and author of Fortune, a new BDSM novel, to the Backseat.  Annabel Joseph is with us to share the details of Fortune.

Annabel Joseph:  Hi Terry! I like that. “Mistress of Origami.”

TK:  So what do hopping dollar frogs and folded paper cranes have to do with your book?

AJ:  Well, the hero of Fortune is a surgeon and he’s really physical. He likes to do things with his hands. So he is really into rope too, and he ties the heroine up in all these intricate ways trying to “tame” her. He also sets out to fold 1000 cranes since that is supposed to bring good fortune. But of course, things are never so simple as that. It’s a very emotional book…

TK: Wow, I know surgeons learn knots, but was he a Boy Scout or what?

AJ: Uh, no…definitely no boy scout. A little too naughty for that.

TK: Well we like them naughty here!  I am a practical person. What if your Dr. hero ties up your heroine and gets called in to work?

AJ: There is actually a scene in the book kind of like that, where he has to untie her pretty quickly. Of course, being so adept with his fingers…so dexterous…lol. This guy is just really good with his hands. His name is Ryan, and he was actually one of the secondary characters in my last book, Deep in the Woods. I loved him so much, I just knew he had to have his own book and his own story.

TK: Do we need to have read the first book to get into the series or is this a stand alone?

AJ:  No, you don’t have to read the first book, since Ryan just made a two chapter supporting appearance as Dave’s best friend in Deep in the Woods. But if you did read it, Ryan has a very sexy part in that book, so it might get you primed, so to speak, for this book. Also, Dave and Sophie, the characters from Deep in the Woods, show up in this book, which is fun. But this book takes place in Boston and the last one took place in Atlanta, and this is a totally new story and a new girl with Ryan, so you can read it without reading Deep in the Woods.

TK: Let’s get a little into your heroine. She has faced some demons. What inspired you, and drives her?

AJ: Almost all of my heroines are fighting demons. I suppose that says something about me. This newest heroine, Kat, really has everything…good health, loving family, good job…but she feels like she’s going nowhere. I think what she really craves is love and connection, but she’s too fearful to give up the control it takes to really fall in love. That’s where Ryan and his shibari ties come in. They are sort of a metaphor for connection and security–and giving up that control to someone. A lot of people I know who like rope and being tied talk about that feeling of care and security. But falling in love is never easy, especially if you’re afraid of failure or being hurt.

TK:  We often think that others have it easier, or everything a person could want, but everyone’s pain is as real as yours.

AJ:  Yes, and that’s a lot of her issue. She feels like…What is WRONG with me that I can’t get it together when I should be able to have my sh*t together? For me, as an author, I prefer to write people who are real like that, who aren’t perfect and totally together. I’m not like that, and I don’t know many who are. I like to write about people who are struggling with life, or emotions or relationships. People struggling with being honest and putting themselves out there and being vulnerable even when they don’t want to be. Those are all really interesting to me, because that’s reality for a lot of people.

TK: Have you always been interested in the art of origami or did the idea for knots come first and the origami followed?

AJ:  I actually became interested in both the knots and the origami only recently. I had heard a lot about rope and shibari from my BDSM friends, but I never really “got” it. Then my good friend became involved with a kinky play partner who was into both rope AND origami and actually integrated both into their BDSM play. That just sparked my author imagination and the story took off from there. When you think about it, both are very intricate and very detail oriented…and of course, both have a mystical/emotional component. There is the long tradition of “senbazuru” or 1000 origami cranes to bring good fortune and a wish, and with shibari you have the concept of “kinbaku” or the emotional interplay that goes on between the shibari rigger and the subject. They both began to seem very mystical and erotic to me over the course of writing this book. So I am fairly new to origami, but I’ve been folding a lot lately. I’d like to fold 1,000 cranes, but it takes a lot of dedication…

TK:   It would be an achievement to be proud of.  Also it might bring you luck – sales – and enough money to pay for all that origami paper!

AJ:  I hope so. I have been trolling Ebay for cheap origami paper lots. But sales would be spectacular.  I really feel like–besides the hot sex and BDSM–this book is very emotional and moving.  I think it will really make people feel something.  So I hope it’s a success.

Anne Kane is joining us in the backseat for a little one on one and to give us a sneak peek at her Holiday Book Sugarplums #3: Christmas Magic.

Do you have a writing space?

I do. I turned the bedroom with the best view into my own little writing cave. My desk is under the window, and when I look out it I can see the field across the road and the cliffs in the distance. The plus to having a dedicated writing space is that I can keep all my reference books, plotting boards and inspirational  photos (wink) right there within reach. I’m thinking of repainting it soon. Right now it’s a neutral beige color. I’m thinking green, or blue, something lively.

Where do you get inspiration to write your books?

Oh, that’s a hard one. Sometimes I see something or hear a chance remark, and it turns into a full blown plot but sometimes ideas just pop into my head and grown from there. We authors refer to those ones as plot bunnies, and they are very dangerous. Not only do they sneak up on you when you least expect it, but they multiply at an alarming rate!

If you could trade places with your characters would you?

In a heartbeat! They have amazing adventures, meet the sexiest alpha males who adore them and do whatever it takes to give them a good time, and then everyone lives happily ever after. Who could ask for anything more?

If you could travel through time would you go forward or backward?

Definitely forward. I want to know what happens to the human race, I want to travel to the stars, explore new universes…. Can you tell that I’ve always been a science fiction fan? LOL!

If you were a car which one would you be?

Interesting question. I think I’d like to be a ’67 Ford Mustang Convertible. Classy, sexy and full of life. I’d be a lovely powder blue color, with a cream soft top. I’ve always loved that car!

Book Blurb: Tali’s been secretly lusting after Jax since the Spring breakup, but he insists on treating her like a sister. Tonight all of the adult elves at the North Pole would be at the Sugar Plum Ball. It was a night of Christmas magic and dreams come true, and if Tali didn’t wake up in the morning with a naked hunk of an elf in the bed beside her, it wouldn’t be for lack of trying.

Will the Christmas Magic of the Sugarplum Ball be enough to help Tali lure Jax into her bed?

Sexy excerpt:

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Davy peeked into the crowded ballroom. “What if Jax thinks I’m really interested in you? This could backfire on both of us.”
“Don’t be such a wimp! Jax isn’t going to hurt you.” She hid her nervousness behind a scornful smile. Her biggest fear was that Jax would smile and wish the two of them much happiness. She didn’t think she could bear that. “When he realizes I have other options, he’s going to fall at my feet and beg me to spend the next six months cuddled up in his cottage in Christmas Town.”
“If you say so.” Davy’s doubtful tone told her exactly what he thought of that statement. “Let’s get in there. I want to get to the snack table before all the rum balls are gone.”
Tali rolled her eyes and allowed the chubby elf to lead her into the ballroom. With a glance around, she located Jax lounging against the edge of the bar with a bored look on his face. If her plan worked out, he wouldn’t be bored for long.
“Take me in your arms and dance me over to the bar.” Tali plastered herself against the poor elf and peeked over his shoulder to see how Jax reacted. The cad! He didn’t even notice them. Tali smiled grimly. He’d notice her before this night was over, or she’d make sure every reindeer on his team had chili mixed in with their rations on Christmas Eve. She’d had enough of this platonic crap. Tonight he was going to find out exactly how hot this little elf could be.
“Ouch! Your nails are digging into my back!” Davy squirmed in her iron grip.
She loosened her fingers and gave him a sheepish grin. “Sorry. I was thinking about something else. Let’s dance over beside him and you can buy me a drink. Just make sure I’m right beside him when we stop.”
“Okay, but be careful. I don’t want him coming after me.”
She wished. The way it looked right now, Jax could care less who had their hands on her, or where. She composed her face and allowed Davy to lead as they approached the bar. At least the damn elf didn’t flee before they got there.
Waiting for the perfect moment, she loosened her grip on Davy’s arm and did a credible job of stumbling over the hem of her long gown. She fell right into Jax’s arms.
The look on his face, surprise mixed with something darker, something sexy, gave her the courage to lean into him for balance while she flashed him her sexiest smile. “Jax! So sorry. I just can’t seem to manage in these shoes.” She pulled the dress all the way up to her thigh and waved her foot in the air. High spiked heels gave her legs a long, sleek look, and while the braided leather straps wrapped around her ankles and thighs did little to increase her stability, they certainly drew attention to her trim legs.
“They’re very nice. Your legs were always one of your best features. Really, I’m surprised some nice young elf hasn’t snapped you up by now.” The dark elf ran one hand down her thigh in a sizzling caress, and she inhaled sharply, tilting her head to look up into the dark pools of his eyes. She could drown in those eyes and die a happy elf.
“I really should go back to Davy.” She looked around, realizing the cad had fled the moment she landed in Jax’s arms. So much for buying her a drink. “We came to the ball together.”
“He’s disappeared.” A wry smile spread across his face. “Looks like he’s abandoned you to my dubious care.”
“Or just gone to find himself a snack.” She caught a glimpse of her absent date filling his plate at the buffet table. “Apparently I’m somewhat less interesting than Mrs. Claus’ shortbread pinwheels.”
Jax chuckled, and the sound sent a ripple of heat through her. “I can assure you, I find you infinitely more fascinating than any of the baked goods, even Mrs. Claus’ famous pinwheels. If I were fifty years younger, you‘d have to fight me off. When I close my eyes I can almost taste that silky mocha skin of yours.”
Tali looked into the deep blue of his eyes and knew she was lost. Desire smoldered there, and she felt the heat rolling through her belly in response. Ever since he’d partnered with her at the Ice Hunt during spring breakup, she’d been obsessed with him. His tightly muscled chest and big capable hands haunted her dreams. She’d thrown herself at him shamelessly all summer but he’d insisted on treating her like a kid sister.
Now it had come down to this. The Sugarplum Ball loosed the mystical gifts of Christmas, and she hoped it would be enough to bring Jax to her. She felt the magic radiating from the delicate piece of sugarplum candy nestled between her breasts. If she didn’t wake up tomorrow with his naked body entwined with hers, it wouldn’t be for lack of trying. “What’s fifty years? My grandmother was seventy-five years younger than my grandpa, and they had a great relationship.” She raised her brows. Age? The reason he’d been giving her the cold shoulder all these months was a mere fifty-year age difference?
“They must have been an exceptional pair, then.” He loosened his grip on her arm. “Most relationship counselors agree that twenty-five years is the maximum age spread in a sustainable relationship.”
Sustainable relationship? She wanted a night of hot sweaty sex, followed by a decade or ten more of the same. She didn’t care about statistics! She placed herself directly in front of him and slid her hand up to his shoulder. Giving him her sexiest smile, she batted her eyelashes. “Care to tango?”

1. What was your motivation to become a writer?

It was more a compulsion than a motivation – I loved English at school whether I was reading or writing and when I was in Year 11, my teacher told me I had the potential to be a writer one day if I worked hard. She was my inspiration!  Real life got in the way for a while but now I know I do not want to do anything else other than write.

 2. How well would you say you know your characters? Shoe size? Favorite food? What side of the bed they sleep on?

I don’t think I ever quite know as much as that but what I do know is how they feel, talk, laugh, yearn, cry…all the emotional stuff is clear and sustainable in my mind at all times. I really feel I know this people inside out.

 3. Which one of your characters would you say is the most like you?

Laura’s (Explicitly English) attitude is very much like mine at the opening of the book in that she makes the decision for change – if something happens in life, you have to pick yourself up and decide what you’re going to do to make yourself feel better. It took me a long time to ‘get it’ that life doesn’t fix itself!

 4. If your book was being made into a movie would you star as your heroine?

Noooo – Laura is blonde and beautiful. I’m dark and kind of average looking, LOL! The visual inspiration behind Laura was British TV actress, Samantha Womack. (I bet you’ll Google her now!)

 5. If you were a dessert which one would you be?

I’m not sure what the proper name is but I think I’d be one of those chocolate sponge desserts that have all the gooey chocolate in the center – I like to think I am rich (spiritually not financially!), appetizing (to my husband at least!) and completely soft-centered!

BIO: Rachel Leigh lives in the UK and is married to her own sexy hero.  Even though this is Rachel’s first erotic romance novella, she enjoyed writing it so much, she has two more lined up and almost ready to go off to The Wild Rose Press.  When she isn’t writing, you can find her reading, running around after her two daughters….or playing with her husband.

You can find out more about Rachel Leigh  www.rachelleigh.co.uk or here  www.rachelleighromance.blogspot.com or get your copy of Explicitly English here http://www.thewildrosepress.com/wilderroses/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=790

What made you decide to write erotic romance versus just romance?

I started out writing “just romance” but found my sex scenes were too hot for a lot of NY publishers, back in the dark ages of the 1990s. Instead of toning them down, I decided to heat them up when I discovered Ellora’s Cave and realized there was a big audience of women who like their romance with the bedroom door (and other places, LOL) all wide-open.

How much of your “real life” is included in your books?

Not much, if you’re talking about my sexual adventures! I’ve been married all my adult life to one guy, and we have seven kids–which I guess means we’ve had sex at least seven times over the years. Seriously, most of what’s in my books comes out of my own fantasies, daydreams that add spice to an otherwise pretty “normal” life, although I have drawn a few characters whose jobs and everyday lifestyles are similar to mine and my friends’.

Is there a writing sanctuary that you go to when you write?

Sanctuary? I wouldn’t call it a sanctuary, exactly, but I do most of my writing in a bright, sunny office where nobody except our Russian Blue cat (unoriginally named Mr. Blue) dares come in unless there’s a real emergency. It contains my desktop computer, some books on writing, pictures of some of the kids and whichever ones of my orchid collection are in bloom at any given time. Once in a while, when the weather is pleasantly cool and dry (rare in the part of Florida where I live), I take my laptop outside and enjoy the garden while writing a scene or two. Rarely, when I’m on a tight deadline, I’ll skip events at conferences and hole up in my hotel room to finish up a book or do edits. Most of the time, though, I write in my office where I’ve got a comfy chair and the natural keyboard that keeps my fingers from getting cramped.

If you were going to make your book into a movie what actors would you pick to be your hero and heroine?

Sackmaster? He’s a huge, muscular, goodlooking guy who reminds me more of a NFL defensive lineman (that’s his job in the book) than a movie star. While I was writing the book, I had a shot of the Minnesota Vikings’ Jared Allen on my desktop.

As for Jimmy’s sex slave, Julie, she could be played by Angelina Jolie, looks-wise, although I imagine Angie might have trouble playing a submissive.

If you were a smoothie what flavor would you be and why?

Strawberry-banana. Tart and sweet, the two flavors blended icy-cold make me feel like I’m cheating on my diet without adding tons of the calories that always seem to land right on my butt. Guess that comes with sitting on a chair six-eight hours a day and spending only one in the gym!

She is currently nominated for the second straight year for Romantic Times’ 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in erotic romance. Her books have earned several prestigious awards. Three of her books have been translated and sold in several European countries.   A CPA and former hospital financial manager, Jacobs now writes full-time. Caution some of this interview is intended for people 18 or over only!!

1. When did you decide to become a writer?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but my when I told my father, he said something along the lines of “Sure, if that’s what you want. But writers don’t make any money.”  (Um, thanks Daddy.)

Whoa. That kind of put the brakes on pursuing it, although teachers in school encouraged my creative writing. I found myself writing romances for my friends during class, and writing fanfic long before I knew there was even a term for it. In college, to save myself from death by boredom during a particular class, I wrote my first novel–that’s still unfinished today. A few years ago I heard about this thing called NaNoWriMo (www.nanowrimo.org), and I decided to try my hand at writing again. The rest, as they say, is history.

2. What character in your books would you say you are most like?

In my urban fantasy novella, COLD BLOODED, Commander Davana Black is a no-nonsense, kick ass, take no prisoners kind of woman. (Well, demon.) She’s all about getting the job done, whatever it takes, no matter who she has to step on along the way to accomplish her mission. When she’s finally confronted with attraction, and subsequently love, for a man she didn’t expect, she doesn’t know what to do with it and manages to flub the whole thing up.

There, ladies and gentleman, is the story of my early years with my husband. Fortunately for me, he’s just as tenacious and we’re still going strong eleven years later.

3. If you were going to choose a different profession what would you be?

I’m a nurse by day and an author by night. If I had to do things differently, I’d probably become a chef by day and remain an author by night. Cooking is all about a different type of creativity. Certain tasks can also be very meditative, and therefore, conducive to getting the writing juices flowing.

4. Can you tell us about any books you have in the works? Any sneak peeks?

Caution 18 or over only!! By continuing to read this you are acknowledging you are 18 or over.

HUNGER AROUSED is my debut with Carina Press. The story came as a stroke of inspiration while watching a television series about gladiators. However, one of the secondary characters, Ezra, has a past that keeps me awake at night. I’m working on a sequel that in a roundabout way has to do with him. Meet Sebastian and Alice in this small snippet from PASSION AROUSED.

He licked his lips, pleasure searing him when he touched sensitive incisors with the motion. “A kiss right here…please…”

      “Yes, kiss me. More.”

She didn’t know what permission she’d given him, but it couldn’t be his concern right now. His need had grown frenzied. His appetite about to consume them both. Sebastian lowered his mouth to her neck, to the rapid beat lifting her skin ever so slightly, and let his nature take over.

Alice arched into him when he pierced her flesh with teeth elongated and hurting. Her whimpering moan became an orgasmic scream when he pulled. He heard the pleasure in it, felt her shudder ripple into him. His hand stroked over the soft skin of her belly, trailed to the rounded curve of her breast. Her nipple beaded beneath his fingers, and he used it to elongate her orgasm. He teased the tip, pinching it when she twisted beneath increasing pressure. And all the while he fed.

Growling into her neck kept him focused. Kept the tug at the base of his spine from turning into an all out loss of control. His dick became steel, trapped between their bodies, throbbing in tune with the teeth sunk deeply into her flesh. He would not come like this. Not from a simple feeding, but never before had blood tasted so good to him. Felt so good. Velvet on his tongue. For every tug, his mind cleared. The heat cooled. The sexual appetite hadn’t abated, but he could think now. Every ounce of her blood warmed through him, healing and soothing.

He didn’t want to take too much; this human deserved more than to be food, but he’d become an addict to her taste. And hearing her throaty moans, her breathy cries as she shuddered, he knew the very soul of her.

5. Since the Holidays are approaching quick can you tell what Thanksgiving food you can’t go without?

I’m a sucker for sweet potatoes. Every year I try a new variation of sweet potatoe casserole/Candied sweet potato. Forget dessert. Just pile on that stuff, loaded down with marshmallows, and I’m in Heaven.

Bio: Dee Carney began writing short stories in middle school, but did not attempt completion of a novel until almost ten years later–which despite good intentions was never finished. Almost ten additional years later, she challenged herself to begin writing again and the love for storytelling was rekindled. Welcome Readers!

Join us in meeting some of the new authors on the scene every Friday.  Hear what the newbies have to say and discover the voice of a new author.

1) What makes your first book Naughty?

PHYSICAL EDUCATION is about as Naughty as a book can get. It’s based at a sex school, which leaves plenty of room open for in-the-bedroom, or in-the-backseat play! While the main storyline is M/F, there’s also a bit of M/M and F/F action.

 2) Things that go bump in the night, Scary Real in your book or Scary Sexy?

As an erotic thriller, the plot line in PHYSICAL EDUCATION, unfortunately, can be Scary Real. People at the school start to go missing, and it’s up to undercover agent Reed to find out what’s happening. What he discovers can and does happen in real life.

That said, there’s plenty of Scary Sexy happening, too. Those who don’t follow the rules may be afraid of a little spanking and public display …

 3) What is the scariest part of sending out that first book?

For me was having no one actually read it before I submitted. Can you believe that? After years of working on newspaper and magazine staffs where someone always reads your work, and then taking writing classes and being part of critique groups! Finally, at the end, the book became so Naughty I didn’t want any of my regular friends to read it. I was afraid of the reaction. Fortunately, the editor came back with “love it.”

 4) What is your naughty car of choice?

My husband owns this old Mango-painted Jeep. It’s not so much the vehicle, but where it used to take us while we were dating – the tops of the hills in Laguna Beach, where we could sit out alone under the stars and watch the city lights, and maybe get a little Naughty.

 5) What did you do to celebrate when your first book was published?

I’m totally a champagne gal. When a book gets published, there are so many steps to celebrate: Proposal being accepted, finishing a chapter (hiccup), completing novel and sending it off, copy editing being done (hiccup), and then there’s the actual – out in print! And then comes the interviews … Excuse me while I go fill my glass.

Thanks so much for having me. Naughty in the Backseat is a total different experience, and hopefully, I can visit again with another release!

Black Cats…

I’ve always been a cat person.  When I was a kid, we lived in a rural area and I always enjoyed springtime because that meant kittens.  Every spring the three or four mother cats would have a litter of soft mewing fur balls. They were so adorable and helpless.  The cats were barn cats so most of them didn’t make it very long, but I always had a cat or ten following me around.  When I was married my hubby didn’t care for cats, but out of love, he gave me a cat for our first Christmas, soon the cat liked him better than she liked me.  He’s a cat person now too.

We have a black cat named Rascal and the little stinker lives up to his name.  His breed is Bombay and true to the breed, he loves people.  He’s my little writing buddy.  I write after the kids are asleep because I have a day job so I’m up late every night banging away at the keyboard. Rascal stays up with me sleeping in the chair next to me or watching me type from the back of the breakfast nook bench.  As soon as I turn, the computer off he’s at the stairs waiting for me to go to bed.  He’ll stop and wait until I’ve got up a few steps and then he’ll go up a few more and stop again. I think he thinks I don’t know how to find my bed since I spend so few hours in it!

As soon as he’s tucked me in, he goes and crawls in to my daughter’s bed with our other cat and goes to sleep.  He’s such a cute little thing.  This summer I decided to write something for Halloween.  When I started to think about what Halloween means to me, I decided that black cats were at the top of my list.  That’s how Just One Night was born in my imagination. Here’s the blurb…

Wynn Goode made a big mistake when he took two of his witch wife’s coven sisters to his bed and expected his wife to join in the fun. Cursed for two hundred years to a life as a tomcat he is only human for one day a year and the only way for him to break the curse is to make a woman truly love him. Mika is a Native American girl who has left her life on the reservation to move to Chicago and act on the stage. When a very strange cat adopts her, she begins to have some very erotic dreams. Will Wynn be able to save her from her jealous ex and make her love him before All Hallows Eve?

I loved writing this story and it just proves that black cats aren’t really bad luck after all.  I hope you will enjoy reading Just One Night as much as I enjoyed writing it.  Silver Publishing releases it on October 30th just in time for you to read it and get in the All Hallows Eve spirit.  I hope it will be your favorite “treat” this year.

Happy Halloween **hugs** ~Ashlynn~

I am excited to welcome Debra Glass to the Backseat today -

Usually I am the only one who does interviews – so to keep things interesting I have decided to add my two cents to some of the answers – and leave only the most interesting questions.  So Enjoy!

Debra GlassIf you weren’t a writer, what would you be?

I joke that my day job is writing and I moonlight as a tour guide. I started a ghost walk tour in my hometown and during the week of Halloween, I escort people to the local haunted sites and tell ghost stories.

What was your favorite book as a child? Why?

My favorite childhood book was 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey by Kathryn Tucker Windham. Ms. Windham is an Alabama storyteller who possesses a lovely Deep South accent. I always enjoyed her creepy tales steeped in legend
and truth.

Sexy heels or comfy flats?

When I go out, I love to wear my favorite pair of wicked stiletto boots. At home, I’m a typical Alabama girl – bare feet!

-  I thought the barefoot part of the Southern woman experience was an exaggeration.

Heroines – Spicy or sweet? Heroes – Cowboy, vampire, or minister?

I love a spicy heroine who has a vulnerable side. I especially enjoy the banter between a strong heroine and an alpha hero. In choosing between cowboy, vampire, or minister, I’d have to take the vampire. I love the idea of otherworldly power and the strength the vampire has to have not to devour the heroine.

- Minister?  Where did that come from?  Alien would have been more likely if I was asking the question!

What’s your favorite word? Least favorite word?

My favorite word is “dangerous.”  My least favorite word is any buzz word currently being bandied about. Right now, because it’s an election year, the word “transparency” has me cringing.

- I have a friend who plans to give his kids, Danger, Sexy, and Adventure for middle names.  We shall see if the future Mrs Bernstein agrees.

Debra GlassSwings or merry-go-round?

Swings. Of course! (the indoor kind)

Winter or Summer?

Summer, summer, summer. I hate to be cold.

Bad boy or Good boy?

I like a nice, healthy mix. Bad boys can be selfish and good boys can be boring.  One with both attributes is continually full of surprises.

Leather or Lace?

A mix. I adore an 18th century badass hero with lace cuffs.

- I like lacy or leather, both at once, each separately, more, less all…

Hot sexy love scenes or sweet romance?

The hotter the better! But I love to focus on the emotions in a love scene rather than the physical choreography.

Vampire, werewolf or ghost?

Ghosts! My Phantom Lovers series feature a trio of ghostly heroes that I adore.  In Lucid, the hero is the ghost of Lord Byron. I love writing a historical hero into a paranormal romance.

Favorite location for a romance?

I’ve set several of my romances in my hometown in Alabama. I’ve read to write where you know instead of what you know. Because I know the scents, sounds and sultry feel of an Alabama summer night, I can describe the hell out of it!

-  Alabama sounds like the location for a Horror Movie, and Texas, and Vermont, and Nevada maybe… but hey I am from Jersey and that is other peoples nightmare location.

Debra GlassMy current release, Twice the Novice, is set in the Bavarian Alps in Germany, where I spent two summers. I tried to bring the rugged but fairytale beauty of that land to both my characters, the plot, and the description of my fictional castle,  Sommerhald. (Oops, did I just give away who inspired Axel von Sommerhalder, Novice’s hero?)

Is setting important to you as a reader? What type settings do you like to read? Comment by October 23 to be entered in a drawing for a free download of my Taboo Ellora’s Cave release, Twice the Novice.

Howdy Readers,

We are joined today by author Leigh Court to talk about her new release, Conqueror Vanquished.  Your story is set in Rome or at least your hero is a Roman, so tell us more…

Leigh Court

Leigh Court:  Hi everyone!  My sexy Roman novella Conqueror Vanquished is set in 52 B.C. just as Rome conquers ancient Gaul (France).  My hero Leonidas is a Roman legion commander who meets his match in Solange, one of the newly conquered subjects.  Here’s the setup: Leonidas Danae Vorenus, commander of Rome’s prestigious Sixth legion, is ordered to establish a strategic outpost in Gaul after its surrender to Julius Caesar.  But on the way to his new post, Leonidas is seriously wounded in an ambush. Only one person can save his life, and she’s his sworn enemy.

Solange is a healer. She values every life, even if it belongs to one of the hated Romans who’ve just conquered her land. Bound by her duty and her new position as a subject of Rome, she is obliged to tend Leonidas in his tent.

But the relationship between conqueror and conquered soon evolves into much more. Their forced intimacy ignites an unexpected attraction, and prompts the two enemies to look beyond the reason for their hatred to explore the powerful erotic feelings simmering underneath.

Terry Kate:  Sexy, and complicated.  We readers love that.  Why ancient Roman times for the setting?  Are you too a fan of the HBO Series Rome?

LC:  Oh, I loved that HBO series!  But mostly I wrote this story because it’s so much fun to see a powerful man brought to his knees, er, I mean his senses, by love.

TK:  Is that the appeal of a warrior, so strong but made weak by love?  Or maybe conquered by it?

LC:  I don’t believe love makes you weak. But my title Conqueror Vanquished definitely gives you a hint at what’s going to happen, LOL!

TK:  Will you visit this time period again?

LC:  I have a sequel in mind for Leo’s second-in-command, Valerian, yes   I learned so many fascinating facts about Roman soldiers while researching this story!  For instance… –        Roman soldiers baked their own bread to eat while on campaign. Every group of eight soldiers had an iron skillet that folded away in their pack just for that purpose. A soldier’s daily grain ration was about 3 ½ pounds, and the army docked their pay for the grain they were given. Imagine if our army leaders charged soldiers for their meals today!

TK:  Is it okay if I picture Lucius Verinus or maybe the actor  who played Marc Antony while I read.  Those two are yummy.

LC:  Well, my character Leo is black haired and blue eyed, so I guess he’d look more like the actor who played Marc Antony, LOL.

You know… I was amazed at how many traditions of our modern weddings can be traced back to Roman times! Take the wedding cake, for example. After an ancient Roman ceremony, an offering was made to their main god, Jupiter, which usually consisted of cake. Once the priest had made the offering, this cake was eaten by the bride and groom, and then shared with wedding guests. Many more of our modern wedding traditions come from ancient Roman times, including carrying a bride over the threshold!

TK:  Wow.  Guess all those traditions come from somewhere…

LC:  This ancient Roman setting is a departure from my previous two Victorian romances, but I’m obviously drawn to the past, when men were noble, and lived for honor.

Terry Kate:  Are there still as honorable men?  Is chivalry dead?

Leigh Court Interview

Leigh Court:  I don’t think chivalry is dead, you just have to look harder for it these days.  I certainly married an amazing guy!  And I think if a woman expects great things from her man, he’ll do his best to live up to those expectations, especially if he loves her   You can read an excerpt of Conqueror Vanquished at my website: www.leighcourt.com.  I’d love to hear what you think of it!  Thanks
